Sport Fest Windsor donates $15,000
This cheque ($15,000.00) presented to Bianca Segatto member of the local CTA organization committee, brings the total to $23,000.00 that Sport Fest Windsor has raised for the games.
The 4th. Bi annual Canadian Tran-splant Games is the largest organ don-ation awareness event in Canada and is the first time being held in Ontario. The local organizing committee hopes to make the Windsor games the best and largest ever held and will show case the new University of Windsor track and field stadium and the U of W dorms will be the site of the athlete village.
The goal is to bring 300-500 transplant athletes and their accompanying partners to Windsor to compete and pay tribute to their donors and show the world that transplantation works and recipients can lead a normal active lifestyle.
We hope to show case Windsor and Essex County to many recipients and donor families from all over Canada.
[info_box]Organ Donation in Canada: The current situation in Canada
More than 3,700 Canadians are awaiting organ transplants for kidneys, hearts, lungs, or livers, and thousands of others are in need of replacements for tissues such as corneas, heart valves, bone grafts, and skin.Last year alone, 147 Canadians died while waiting for organs that never came because suitable donors were not found in time. Part of the problem lies with Canada having one of the lowest organ donation rates among industrialised nations. There are fewer than 14 donors per million people in this country, as compared with more than 31 in Spain. What’s more, the gap between transplant patients on waiting lists and numbers of available organs is widening. [/info_box] [ztop] [savelives_box]
