 1983 Jay Schroeder win Arcanum

Runner-up last year, Schroeder captures Arcanum

They say all good things come to those who wait and proof of the pudding today is Jay Schroeder.

A distant runner-up last year to Gino Castellan, Schroeder capped his high school career Tuesday night when he was named the winner of the Royal Arcanum Trophy for boys as the best student-athlete in the city for 1982-83.

And because he won it this year, it was extra-special to the nineteen-year-old Massey High School football, hockey and track star.

“I’m very pleased and very honored, gratified actually, since there were some fine athletes in contention this year,” Schroeder said late Tuesday night.

“Who was Lowe’s nominee, (Rick) Holland or (Lloyd) Dean?” Informed that it was Holland, he said:

“That shows you how tough it was when an athlete like Dean isn’t nominated.”

THE CLOSENESS of the votes bears out Schroeder’s theory, too which was also shared by the 10 high school athletic directors who made the decision.

Schroeder won with 35 points to 23 for Holland with Gavin McDougall of Herman a close third with 15 points.

“It was one of the real tough years to make a decision, a very strong field,” said Schroeder’s Massey Athletic Director, Godfrey Janisse. “So many of the nominees were outstanding all-round athletes.”

But Schroeder’s standout play as a leader of the Massey’s WSSA football champions and a defensive-minded forward with the Massey hockey finalists, plus his ability as a pole vaulter swayed the voters.

Holland, for instance, had impressive credentials, having been named All-City in both football and soccer, the latter with a championship team. He had a tremendous year in football, actually dominated the league,” said Janisse of Schroeder, a fullback and linebacker who also made All-City.

“It was especially gratifying after two knee dislocations, one last year and one this year, to help win the championship,” said Schroeder.

LOSING THE HOCKEY was a downer, but I guess that far was something.”

He also claims pole-vaulting is for “Crazy people” but he was crazy enough to win the SWOSSA championship this year with a plus-four meter vault after losing the WSSA title. He will represent SWOSSA at the OFSAA meet in Kitchener this weekend.

He says he was all for hockey when he was younger but his priorities changed after he and his family returned three years ago after spending one year in California.

“Now football is No.1 with me,” he asserted.

The people at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia were impressed, too, with his football ability, enough to offer Schroeder a football scholarship which he says he is accepting.

“My dad and I weighed the situation and decided on Simon Fraser, “ revealed Schroeder, who at five-ten and 180 with fine speed expects to run the ball some and also play some defensive halfback at SFU.

His dad, of course, is Jack Schroeder, the WSSA football convenor and outstanding referee who, as athletic director at Herman, took part in the selection process last night at the Royal Arcanum clubhouse in Tecumseh.

“I’M PROUD, IT”S a once in-a-lifetime thing,” said poppa Jack, “especially this year when there were so many bona-fide candidates.”

The Royal Arcanum Trophy, instituted 34 years ago, is presented annually to the Windsor high school boy best combines athletic ability with scholastic achievement.

Each school nominates one young man and then the athletic directors discuss the slate and select a winner.

Others nominated this year, in alphabetical order were: Don Cameron, Walkerville; Mark Deroia, Brennan; Rick Dimitrijevic Forster; Rob Hreljac, Riverside; Greg Johnson, Centennial; Rob Sartor, Assumption; and Dick Taylor Kennedy.

Taking part in the voting were Janisse, Schroeder, Tino Baggio (Centennial), Jack Hool (Assumption), Bob Issell (Lowe), Bob Miller (Riverside), Bob Turner (Forster), Jim Hoffman (Brennan), Gerry Strong, (Walkerville) and Jerry Carpenter (Kennedy).

Tonight at the same location voting will be conducted to determine WSSA’s top female athlete for 1982-83

[info_box]Fewer than 15 Canadians in a million are organ donors? It’s true. Canada’s organ donation rate ranks in the bottom half of countries in the western world where transplants are performed. More than 3,500 Canadians are waiting for an organ transplant, and every year nearly 150 of them die waiting. We have some of the best transplant technology in the world, some of the most highly skilled surgeons, some of the most prestigious transplant hospitals, but there are never enough organs available to save enough lives.
