Les Robinson Sparks Clippers Comeback
Kennedy Clippers staged a “Miracle” comeback for the second time within a week to tie Assumption 4-4 in their WSSA Hockey League final Saturday night at Windsor Arena.
Before 500 fans, Clippers rallied from a 4-1 deficit late in the final period to trigger three goals within two minutes and force the title test into overtime. The teams played a ten minute scoreless extra period before settling for a draw.
The two teams meet again Wednesday at Windsor Arena (4:00pm) in the deciding game for the league championship.
After Tom Pendlebury and Noel Nightingale exchanged goals, McEachen and Gignac put Assumption up by two. Neither club scored in the second, then McEachen set up Meadows to put Raiders up 4-1 near the halfway mark of the final period.
A penalty to Stelmack gave Clippers new life and Nightingale’s second goal ignited the scoring flame. They continued to press and Nightingale sent Les Robinson through to make it 4-3.
From the faceoff they rushed past the startled raiders and Don Costescu lifted Les Robinson’s rebound past Goalie John Stolarchuk. Contest was rugged as referees Teno and Brenner handed out ten minors to Assumption to seven and a misconduct to Kennedy. Penalties have proven disastrous over the two-game series for assumption who have served 18 to their 0pponents nine.
